Daniel Soliman recebeu o título de Doutor em Egiptologia pela Universidade de Leiden em 2016, com dissertação sobre marcas de identidades e letramento na comunidade de trabalhadores da necrópole real de Tebas. Na Universidade de Copenhagen, ele participou de um projeto de pesquisa sobre a economia e administração da construção de tumbas
monumentais durante o Reino Novo. Entre 2018 e 2019, Daniel Soliman contribuiu com o projeto de pesquisa no Museu Britânico sobre trocas de antiguidades egípcias e núbias. Desde 2019, ele é curador da coleção egípcia e núbia no Museu Nacional de Antiguidades
em Leiden, onde trabalhou na exibição Kemet: Egypt in Hip-Hop, Jazz, Soul & Funk.

Since the early nineteenth century, ancient Egyptian and Nubian cultures have inspired intellectual and artistic production in the African diaspora. African-American intellectuals striving to obtain social equity and to improve the social-economic position of their communities believed that fostering self-awareness should stand at the basis of real change. Later, numerous Black artists from the African continent and in the African diaspora have borrowed from ancient Egyptian and Nubian cultures, approaching them as quintessential African. By looking at the Egyptian and Nubian past, they have endeavoured
to inform the present and shape the future of Black communities. They challenge
Eurocentric and racist historiography of African cultures and promote Afrocentric and Pan-African perspectives on the ancient cultures of the Nile Valley. This talk explores the work of Black musicians from the 1950ies to today, working in the genres such as jazz, soul, funk, rap, disco, reggae, afrobeat and house. Music is here taken in the broadest sense, to include sound, lyrics, album art, music videos, and dress. More than entertainment, some of the underlying ideas of this musical tradition are relevant to understand understanding the politics of knowledge production in the field of Egyptology
